Elephant Havens Foundation is a unique elephant orphanage in Botswana dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned and abandoned elephant calves. The sanctuary provides a safe refuge where these young elephants can recover, grow, and slowly begin the journey back toward independence. Beyond caring for the calves, the foundation also works closely with local communities to promote understanding of elephant behaviour and the importance of protecting their natural habitat.

Spending time at Elephant Havens offered a rare glimpse into the delicate balance between conservation and survival. Many of the calves arriving here have lost their mothers due to drought, human–wildlife conflict, or natural causes. Without intervention, their chances of survival in the wild are extremely small.

Watching the young elephants interact with their caretakers is a powerful experience. Despite the hardships they have faced, their curiosity and playful nature remain unmistakable. Slowly and patiently, they learn to trust again, forming bonds not only with their human carers but also with the other calves that now make up their new family.

During my visit, I had the privilege of documenting the arrival of several orphaned elephants as they began a new chapter in their lives. Seeing these animals step into a safe environment, surrounded by people dedicated to their protection, was both humbling and inspiring.

In a region where human–wildlife conflict continues to grow, initiatives like Elephant Havens play an essential role. They not only give vulnerable elephants a second chance but also help build a future where communities and wildlife can coexist.

Witnessing these moments in such a remarkable place was a powerful reminder of both the fragility of wildlife and the importance of the people working tirelessly to protect it.
